Edible oases beneath the Citadel. Danske Gas becomes Main Partner of the Zielony Fundusz dla Warszawy
Danske Gas has joined the Zielony Fundusz dla Warszawy – the Green Fund for Warsaw – as its Main Partner. The company's donation will finance “Oazy Jadalne”, the Edible Oases: nearly 670 shrubs and other plants of native species, to be planted in Park Fosa i Stoki Cytadeli, the Moat and Citadel Slopes park.

The moat and slopes of the Citadel are one of those places in Warsaw that everyone knows and hardly anyone visits. Here the greenery runs down from the ramparts of the nineteenth-century fortress towards the Vistula; between Żoliborz and the New Town it is quieter than anywhere else in the city centre.
The Zielony Fundusz dla Warszawy is the mechanism by which the city raises money from businesses and residents to develop its green spaces. The Zarząd Zieleni m.st. Warszawy – Warsaw's municipal greenery board – proposes the projects; the donor chooses. Danske Gas chose the park beneath the Citadel and the title of Main Partner of the Green Fund.
“Oazy Jadalne” is a network of hidden edible pockets: multi-layered, self-sustaining plant niches composed entirely of native species and traditional Polish varieties – from a carpet of wild strawberries, through ‘Polana’ raspberries, ‘Gazda’ blackberries and ‘Bona’ currants, to tall serviceberries. Nearly 670 plants in all, recreating the ecosystem of a woodland edge and feeding birds, pollinators and, come autumn, anyone out for a walk.
The park supplies its own wood chips for mulching, so the donation goes entirely into living plants. The varieties are drought-resistant and suited to park maintenance – this is meant to grow for years, not just for a season. The work is due to be completed by the end of 2026.
Our everyday work is energy in the form of cargoes and contracts. A shrub planted beneath the Citadel has no volume and no delivery date, but it points in the same direction: fewer emissions and more life in the city where we work.
